There are two diverse wedding trends we’ve seen booming in 2016. The first is an “unplugged” wedding, where the couple respectfully asks guests for their undivided attention, sans cell phone and camera, until after their ceremony has concluded and they have shared their own photos on social media. The second is a social media savvy soiree with a catchy and clever wedding hashtag to prove it.
According to a survey conducted in 2014 by wedding-planning site TheKnot.com and Mashable, 55 percent of couples said they would use a personal wedding hashtag. By this year, the percentage is sure to have increased. Not sure if you think wedding hashtags are #perfect or #passé? Here’s a guide to wedding hashtags, made easy!
What Are Wedding Hashtags?
hash·tag: According to Sprout Social, a hashtag is a word or phrase preceded by a hash mark (#), used within a social media post to identify a keyword or topic of interest and facilitate a search for it. Typically, a wedding hashtag is a personalized phrase unique to a particular couple’s special day.
Where to Use Wedding Hashtags
Most social networks use hashtags in the same basic way; to organize data and make it easier for user consumption. However, each network has a different tweak on how they use them. The most common sites that utilize hashtags are Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, but there are a whole list of additional social media sites that encourage their use, including Pinterest, Google+, and more!
Why Wedding Hashtags Work
Hounding your guests to send their candid photos and videos to you post-wedding is never an ideal situation so instead use this as an opportunity to promote your custom wedding hashtag! Each time guests use your one-of-a-kind hashtag along with their social media posts, they will be immediately indexed by the social network and easily searchable. Hashtags not only encourage a wealth of photo sharing, they allow you to relive your big day by scrolling through your hashtag’s news feed and see your wedding through the eyes of your guests.
